Download Festival is the UK's biggest rock and metal festival, held at the legendary Donington Park in the East Midlands. Since 2003 (and as Monsters of Rock before that), Donington has been hallowed ground for guitar-driven music. Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slipknot, and AC/DC have all headlined. Three days, four stages, 111,000 fans, and a lineup that spans classic rock legends to up-and-coming metal bands. The Apex Stage (capacity 90,000) is where the magic happens — the Download headliner slot is one of the most prestigious in rock music. British festival camping is an experience — be prepared for mud. Donington is notorious for it. Wellies (rubber boots) are essential. The weather can be anything from blazing sun to horizontal rain, often in the same day. Getting there: East Midlands Airport (EMA) is 10 minutes away. Trains to Derby or Nottingham, then shuttle bus. Driving and camping is the most common approach. Pro tip: The Dogtooth Stage is where you will discover your next favorite band. Do not spend the entire weekend at the main stage — the smaller stages have the best energy.
